Letter for Churches from Chief Medical Officier – Re: reopening

September 24, 2020
Dear Faith Leaders,
I want to thank you for spending your Tuesday night with Premier Kenney and me. As I have said before, places of worship are important to many Albertans during difficult times and you are pillars of strength and examples in your communities.

I know you share the same desire to keep Albertans safe that I do, and I am grateful for all the ways you have cared for your communities of faith and larger communities over the past many months of the pandemic. Your work is needed now more than ever as we seek a balance between the need to reduce the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions and the need to continue minimizing risk from COVID-19.

To help you and your faith communities, guidance was created specifically for places of worship. You can find this information at open.alberta.ca/publications/covid-19-information-guidance-for-places-of-worship This guidance is currently being updated with information on safely resuming nurseries and children’s programming as well as the updated singing guidance, and the new version will be posted here once it is available.

Another good resource is our General Relaunch Guidance at
alberta.ca/assets/documents/covid-19-general-relaunch-guidance.pdf. This document contains important information including cleaning and disinfection guidance and infection prevention and control measures to keep your worshippers safe.

Thank you again for all your work to limit the spread of COVID-19, to support your communities in resilience through the time of restrictions, and to keep Albertans safe.

Yours sincerely,
Deena Hinshaw, BSc, MD, MPH, CCFP, FRCP
Chief Medical Officer of Health
